Public Speaking : AIRLINE FOOD FOR THOUGHT

OK, you choke on the food, or if you fly Southwest a lot likeI do, you dont even get any food. Why not give your seatmates some food for their minds?

I carry three of my books along for each leg of my journey. Whoever sits next to me, or anywhere near me that looks like a business person gets a copy. Before long Im doing a book signing in the aisle and people are asking me for my card. One time on Southwest I got hired for an Arizona Association meeting before we landed. Another time, again on Southwest (believe it or not) I sat next to Wynona Judd and she asked me for information on my speaker coaching services. On a first class upgrade on United I sat next to a guy who is President and CEO of a 150 million dollar company. By the time we landed I was invited to his home and he offered to personally introduce me to the VP of all seven of his divisions. (Update: We just had dinner together in Los Angeles last week and we are supposed to get together again in April)

Dont have a book? Make a cd to give out and follow up later. Its your choice. Complain about the food, or feed your information to your fellow passengers.

Public Speaking : SPEAKER HUMOR

=> Did you ever notice that intelligence tests are biased
toward the literate?

=> I called up a temp agency looking for work and they
asked if I had any phone skills. I said, "I called you
didnt I?"

=> Some people always give 100% at work:
12% Monday
23% Tuesday
40% Wednesday
20% Thursday
5% Friday

=> My receptionist hated her job. She kept answering the
phone, "Hello. Can you help me?"

=> Its hard to make a comeback when you havent been anywhere.

=> Hard work will pay off later. Laziness pays off now!

=> The latest survey shows that three out of four people
make up 75% of the population.

=> If at first you dont succeed. No one will be surprised.

=> People used to just look for a free lunch. Now they want
it delivered too.

=> If people really profitted from their mistakes, we would
all be rich by now.

=> Most people dont mind going to work. Its the working
itself they dont like.

=> You cant judge a book by its cover, but you can tell a
lot about a corporation by its Chapter 11.

Public Speaking : PICK YOUR AUDIENCE

(Did he say "pick" my audiences?). Yes, I did say pick your audiences. Some of you may not have this luxury because you must present as part of your job, but those of you that do, will move up faster in the speaking world. When you are a beginning speaker it is important for you to experience different types of audiences just FOR the experience. As you climb the speaking ladder where the audiences are bigger, or more important to your career, and the stakes are higher, you must learn to just say no.

Most top speakers dont accept every request to speak even if they are available, and the money is right. They pick their engagements to put themselves in front of audiences whose profiles indicate the greatest chance of success. If you are a highly technical presenter, you would not want to be speaking to a widget sales group at their annual retreat. Conversely, as a really fun retreat facilitator, you would not want to be speaking to a group of radar technicians who are only interested in performance data of the latest missile protection system.
Avoid accepting engagements where the audiences needs are clearly out of sync with your abilities, likes and dislikes.

Dont get me wrong. I want you to keep pushing your limits, but if your audience needs more than you can give -- thats right -- you bombed. Although it will be a lesson learned, do yourself and everyone else a favor. Learn to just say no.

Public Speaking : QUICK PRESENTATION SKILLS TIP

THINK GLOBAL
by Tom Antion

The world is getting smaller. Now, it is no big deal to put us on a plane and expect us to address an international audience twelve hours later. Or we might face a U. S. audience made primarily of people from Japan, or India. A handy and inexpensive source of international background information is the Culturgram published by the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies, which is part of Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah. Each Culturgram is a four page newsletter, updated every August, that gives you an easy to understand overview of the country of your choice. It includes customs and common courtesies, along with information about the people and their lifestyle.

References are also included for additional resources.
Currently 168 Culturgrams are available. Prices range from $6.00 for a single copy to 50 cents for bulk purchases.
Call (800) 528-6279 for details.

Public Speaking : $$$$$$$ SPEAKER MARKETING TIP $$$$$$$$

I credit this tip to professional speaker Jeff Slutsky.

RAISE YOUR FEE AND GIVE AWAY YOUR PRODUCTS

I started using this tip the moment my latest book came offthe presses, but you can use any kind of product to make itwork. Here*s how it works. You always want to add extra value for the people hiring youas their speaker. Let*s say you give the meeting organizer100 books or audio tapes when he or she hires you to speak. The products can be given away to the audience members, orsold at the event to help defray the cost of your appearance. This technique also makes you more attractive to speakersbureaus because your fee is higher. If you create the productsyourself and keep the unit cost low, you still come out aheadafter paying for the product and the speakers bureau commission.AND the client gets added value too. Everyone wins and that*swhat keeps us working.

Public Speaking : HUMOR TECHNIQUE

Why use Humor?

Why should I bother using humor in my presentations? Can*t I just deliver my information and sit down? You sure can and that*s what most people do. The problem is that most people are not effective presenters. They are nighty nite, snooze inducing, say your prayers, hit the sack, unlicensed hypnotists. They are ZZZZZs presenters. They might be experts in their field and be able to recite hours and hours of information on their topic, but is that effective?
According to Bob Orben, Special Assistant to President Gerald Ford and Former Director of the White House Speech writing Department, "Business executives and political leaders have embraced humor because humor works. Humor has gone from being an admirable part of a leader*s character to a mandatory one."
A survey of top executives who earned more than $250,000 per year was conducted by a large executive search firm. The survey found that these executives believed their communication skills were the number one factor that carried them to the top. Mastering the use of humor and other high explosion techniques puts a fine polish on your presentation skills. This can help propel you to the top of the speaking profession, or make you stand-out from your colleagues when you are doing a business presentation.
There are many benefits you can derive from using humor in your presentations. Keep in mind that these benefits only help you reach your ultimate purpose for making the presentation. They are not purposes themselves unless, of course, you are only interested in entertaining.
Using humor does the following for you:

** HELPS YOU CONNECT WITH THE AUDIENCE.
** MAKES YOU MORE LIKEABLE.
**AROUSES INTEREST.
**KEEPS ATTENTION.
** HELPS EMPHASIZE POINTS AND IDEAS.
** DISARMS HOSTILITY.
** OVERCOMES OVERLY FLATTERING INTRODUCTIONS.
** GETS YOUR POINT ACROSS WITHOUT CREATING HOSTILITY.
** HELPS RELATE FACTS AND FIGURES.
** MAKES A POSITIVE IMPRESSION.
** SHOWS THAT YOU DON'T TAKE YOURSELF TOO SERIOUSLY.
** HELPS PAINT PICTURES IN THE AUDIENCE*S MIND.
** MAKES INFORMATION MORE MEMORABLE.
** LIGHTENS UP HEAVY MATERIAL.
TOM'S LIST
** YOU WILL BE ASKED BACK.
** YOU WILL GET HIGHER EVALUATIONS OR MORE SALES.
**$$$$ YOU WILL MAKE MORE MONEY.
** YOU WILL MAKE PEOPLE HAPPY. This is my favorite benefit. I get great satisfaction from knowing that I have brightened someone else*s life. I had an executive come up to me after one of my humor seminars and say, "You opened up a whole new world for me."
I almost cried right on the spot. I*ll never forget it.

Public Speaking : Words are Funny

Public speaking professionals are careful to choose specific words in their presentations. As you are probably aware, some words are seen as funnier than others. Cracker, turkey, donkey…these words are funny. Why? Research found that the “K” sound acts as a reminder to our baby days. When Grandmama Kline pinched your cheeks and made the cootchie-cootchie coo noises, she was conditioning you to find comfort in these sounds. Now as an adult, we find humor in these sounds.

Before your public speaking presentations, try to find a few funny words with the “K” sound to include. Just remember that not all words that have a “K” sound include Ks. Some are hard Cs.

Public Speaking: Trouble with Google

Sorry you haven't seen any postings for a while. Google made a big sweep of blogs and shut ours down saying it was a potential spam blog hahaha

Even the email they sent to us said, "if you're reading this, your blog probably isn't spam. . . ." which tells me they just used automated software to try to clean out their system.

We were not allowed to post during that time, but we're back giving great public speaking tips.

Don't forget to visit Amazing Public Speaking and get your 5 buck 30 day trial where we have over 250 training videos on being great on stage and getting paid to speak.

Public Speaking : Why Use Humor?

Why use humor? Because without it, even a small amount, your public speaking event is going to bomb. Ok, well, maybe it won’t be a catastrophe but you can’t talk for hours on end and not introduce something funny and not expect someone in the front row to be fast asleep and drooling on your latest and greatest handout. Maybe your information is very interesting…so much so that your audience members are glued to your every word…but the longer your presentation, the less amount of time they will be attentive.

Unless of course if you make them laugh. Trust me, this changes everything about a public speaking presentation! Everyone loves to laugh and they’ll be at your feet the entire time waiting for another opportunity. Why do you think comedians are so funny? People don’t pile in the seats for content. They go for the laugh. If you can establish yourself as a humorous public speaker, you’ll have a waiting list for all of your engagements!

Here are just some of the ways humor is a useful public speaking tool:
** Makes information more memorable
** Lightens up heavy material
** You will be asked back
** Your speaking will get you higher evaluations or more sales
** You will make more money
** You will make people happy
** Overcomes overly flattering introductions
** Gets your point across without creating hostility
** Helps relate facts and figures
** Makes a positive impression
** Shows that you don't take yourself too seriously
** Helps paint pictures in the audience's mind
** Helps you connect with the audience
** Makes you more likeable
** Arouses interest
** Keeps attention
** Helps emphasize points and ideasDisarms hostility
