Presentation Skills: Add Weight

No I'm not promoting obesity. I'm referring to outdoor
presentations. If you are ever forced (I say "forced" because you
should try to avoid outdoor presentations at all costs) to do an
outdoor presentation, then make sure you have several different
kinds of weights handy to help control your presentation.

You might need a sand bag or dumbell to hold down the easel of
your flipchart. How about taping some heavy coins to the bottom
of the sheets and clamping the edges to keep the breeze from
lifting up the pages?

Paperweights, or in a pinch, plain old rocks are great for
holding down papers you have on a table on stage.

What else do you commonly have with you on stage that could blow
around in a breeze? Make sure it's secured.

Ties and scarves that look gorgeous in a no wind hotel room look
terrible and distracting when flapping in the wind.

Keep your weight up and you'll make the best of a windy
situation.

Public Speaking: What Is A Great Speaker?

=> Most great speakers actually do or live what they talk about.
This translates into high credibility. They are not simply giving
book reports.

=> Great speakers have become well known enough in their circles
of expertise to carry even more credibility along with their
words. This is very valuable to the audience because it reduces
their resistance to the believability of the speaker's message
and allows them to focus on the message.

=> Great speakers know a tremendous amount about their audience.
They research the organization and in many cases interview
audience members. They choose their final comments carefully
based upon what they have learned from their research.

=> Great speakers think long and hard about developing visuals
that enhance their message instead of overshadowing it. They
don't allow their visuals to take over the show. These visuals
could be projected images, props, foam boards, costumes,
flip charts etc.

=> Great speakers when possible come early and stay late to best
connect with the audience members. Being aloof has some
advantages, but unless you are a celebrity already, being aloof
in most cases will slow your progress.

How can you be a "great" speaker? It's easier than you think...

Public Speaking Marketing Tips: Referral Fees

You can be a really great platform speaker and still not get
people to refer you for other speaking engagements.

I don't know why that is. I suspect that people just get busy
thinking about their own lives and problems and -- can you
believe it? -- They just don't dedicate themselves to telling the
world how great you are.

One way to encourage people to spread your name around is to
offer them an incentive in the form of a referral fee. When money
is involved somehow people remember your name more.

I offer up to 20 percent of my speaking fee as a
commission/referral fee if someone calls up and says, "Joe, saw
you speak and said we have to have you at our next convention.
Are you available . . ." This means that Joe did my selling job
for me and all I have to do to close the deal is check my
calendar book and send the contract.

I offer 10 percent if someone calls because of Joe and makes me
jump through all the normal hoops to send press kits, demo
materials and keeps me on the phone for hours to see if I'm the
right fit for their audience.

In the first case, Joe either had the clout or did such a great
selling job for me that he deserves more money. In the second
case Joe didn't have the clout and didn't do a good enough
selling job, so he gets a little less. Either way Joe and I both
win.

A colleague of mine and professional speaker Bill Cates wrote the
book "Unlimited Referrals." I suggest you get a copy for tons of
other ideas on getting people to refer you.

Public Speaking Skills: Schmooze

One of the easiest things to do to get a good reaction from the audience is to schmooze with them before the presentation. I actually start this by pre-program phone interviews before I even get to the state where I'm speaking. This tip has to do with schmoozing right before you go on stage.

Whenever possible make it a firm point to have your presentation equipment and materials set up and tested long before anyone is expected to arrive at the meeting. When the attendees do begin to arrive, start introducing yourself as the speaker and shaking hands with them.

If they are coming in a few at a time, you should be able to spend a few minutes talking to each group. Either make small talk or ask them what they want to get out of being there. Pay particular attention to people that are by themselves and facilitate introducing them around if it's appropriate . . . at any rate, make them feel at home.

These small gestures will create tons of rapport and cause most of the people that you've touched to be rooting for you.

Great Public Speaking Media Training

I make no outbound cold calls whatsoever. I can not even stand the thought of it. One of my main sources of bookings comes from stories placed by me or about me in the media and from radio and TV appearances. I can not really even say I am tremendously successaful at getting these placements, but here is what I am doing to get better and also how it makes me money.

A few lines in entrepreneur magzine has made me about $11,000.00 so far for two speeches. An article I wrote for SalesDoctor Electronic Magazine made me $5500.00 for a speech and almost made me over $40,000.00 on one deal. The client was considering buying a book for each of the 3200 people in the audience. My performances on radio networks all over the world gives me bragging rights forever.

These are just a few of the benefits I have received from media marketing. Here is how to get started. Write articles and submit them to electronic magazines, websites and print publications. Call or write magazines that you would like to be in and offer yourself as an expert on your topic. Journalists keep good files on experts because they know that having access to experts on various topics will make their article writing much easier. Do the same for your local TV stations who use experts on their news programs all the time. Buy a radio database and start doing radio talk shows. Get some media training so you are darn good when you get on the media.

Tom Antion: Business Humor

YOU KNOW YOU WORK IN CORPORATE AMERICA IF ...

You sat at the same desk for 4 years and worked for three different companies

Your company welcome sign is attached with Velcro

Your resume is on a diskette in your pocket

Your company logo on your badge is applied with stick-um

You order your business cards in "half orders" instead of whole boxes

When someone asks about what you do for a living, you lie

You get really excited about a 2% pay raise

You learn about your layoff on CNN

Your biggest loss from a system crash is that you lose your best jokes

You sit in a cubicle smaller than your bedroom closet

Salaries of the members on the Executive Board are higher than all the Third World countries' annual budgets combined

You think lunch is just a meeting to which you drive

It's dark when you drive to and from work

Public Speaking: Pick Your Audience

(Did he say "pick" my public speaking audiences?). Yes, I did say pick your audiences. Some of you may not have this luxury because you must do speaking as part of your job, but those of you that do, will move up faster in the speaking world. When you are a beginning public speaker it is important for you to experience different types of audiences just FOR the experience. As you climb the speaking ladder where the audiences are bigger, or more important to your career, and the stakes are higher, you must learn to just say no.

Most top speakers don't accept every request to speak even if they are available, and the money is right. They pick their engagements to put themselves in front of audiences whose profiles indicate the greatest chance of success. If you are a highly technical speaker, you would not want to be speaking to a widget sales group at their annual retreat. Conversely, as a really fun retreat facilitator, you would not want to be speaking to a group of radar technicians who are only interested in performance data of the latest missile protection system.

Avoid accepting engagements where the audiences needs are clearly out of sync with your abilities, likes and dislikes. Don't get me wrong. I want you to keep pushing your limits, but if your audience needs more than you can give --that's right -- you bombed. Although it will be a lesson learned, do yourself and everyone else a favor. Learn to just say no.
